It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
