It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
