It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
