It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
