It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
