It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
