It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
