It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
