It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
