It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
