It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
