It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
