It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
