It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
