It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
