It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
