It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
