It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
