It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
