It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
