It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
