It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
