It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
