It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
