It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
