It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
