It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
