It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
