It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
