It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
