It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
