It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
