It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
