It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
