It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
