It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
