It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
