It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
