It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
