It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
