It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
