It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
