It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
