It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
