It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
