It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
