It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
