It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
