job description form template
It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
