It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
